Inboorling

“Inboorling” was used in the Netherlands from the 13th century onwards, and shares a basic meaning—someone born in the land—with the term “native.” It is, however, a more exaggerated form of native, having the connotations of primitive and wild. In the early 19th century, it was used by some to describe all Indonesians, but it later was ascribed only to so-called tribal peoples in the Dutch colonies. In the Colonial Exhibition of 1883 in Amsterdam, the term “inboorlingen,” for example, was used to describe peoples both from Indonesia and Suriname. In Surinam itself it was never used to describe the Indigenous peoples. Today the term is mostly associated with people who are considered to be primitive.
